What to study

The most famous UI joke in CrossCode, and it is a character sheet in disguise. Lea, the protagonist, can barely speak, her vocabulary in the fiction is a handful of words, so her dialogue UI is a portrait and a stack of identical black boxes, each containing the only greeting she has: 'Hi!' Three of them pile up beside her large portrait (blue hair, horned headpiece, hands clasped, visibly delighted) as she greets someone again and again, the dimmer third box below marking the newest repetition arriving. Nothing else is needed: no nameplate debate, no choice wheel, just the game's dialogue grammar, portrait cut-in at right, angled speech boxes, the small sprite waiting in the world at upper left, reduced to one word repeated until it becomes personality. Where other RPGs use dialogue screens to deliver plot, this one uses the layout itself to tell you who she is. Frame at about 0:51 in the CrossCode Trailer 0.7 (Steam), a scene-change survivor at 50.92s, inspected at full resolution (1920x1080).
