What to study

This is the frame Banished's reputation rests on: the whole government of a town on one screen, in three small windows that never leave the world. Professions answers 'who does what' as twenty steppers, the town's only real resource is people, so assigning them is the core verb, and the list's refusal to tidy away over-assignments (20 miners for 15 posts) makes it a report, not a form. The Town Hall graph answers 'how has it gone', five years of Food as one sawtooth line, winter bites visible as teeth, which is all the forecasting the game offers. Resource Limits answers 'when do we stop'. Labour, history and caps: later city-builders copied this exact trio of panels, and the original still states it with less chrome than any of them, three dark windows, one outlined building, and a toolbar one row high. Frame at about 1:24 in the GameTrailer (Steam; manual extraction, the three panels are open together only in this held composite shot).

Screen inventory

  • the Professions window lists all twenty occupations in two icon-led columns, each row an assigned count against a capacity with stepper arrows: Laborer 45, Builder 1 of 0, Farmer 80 of 80, Herdsman 8 of 13, Gatherer 0 of 0, Fisherman 28 of 28, Hunter 0 of 0, Woodcutter 16 of 16, Forester 24 of 24, Herbalist 0 of 0; Blacksmith 3 of 3, Brewer 5 of 5, Tailor 3 of 3, Vendor 24 of 24, Trader 2 of 6, Miner 20 of 15, Stonecutter 4 of 15, Teacher 5 of 5, Physician 1 of 1, Cleric 2 of 2
  • the numbers are allowed to be impossible-looking and stay honest: Miners stand at 20 of 15 and Builders at 1 of 0, the panel reports assignments as they are after workplaces close or shrink, rather than silently correcting them
  • right of it, the Town Hall window is open on its Graphs tab (the other tabs read Overview, Production, Inventory, Nomads, Trade Items): a single yellow line charts Food over a Time Range of 5 Years, axis 0 to 31000, its sawtooth falling each winter and recovering each harvest, ending at 'Now'
  • bottom-left, the Resource Limits window repeats the town's nine production caps (Logs 2000, Fuel 3000, Herbs 100, Stone 500, Tools 1500, Clothes 200, Iron 500, Food 30000, Alcohol 500), the same panel seen over the Market a moment earlier, because it belongs to no building
  • the Town Hall itself is outlined in yellow in the world between the two data windows, above ripe corn and wheat fields; two one-row toolbars along the bottom are the only permanent chrome in a frame carrying three full data panels
