What to study
Most games would express 'spawn more of the player character' as a number in a settings file. Baba Is You expresses it as a three-tile sentence lying on the floor, and this frame is the sentence executing: BABA IS MORE has filled a black void with roughly forty Babas in a widening diamond, several already stacked on top of each other because the formation has run out of room. It is the clearest possible demonstration that the word tiles are not a metaphor for an underlying rules engine - they are the engine, and their effects are immediate, physical and slightly uncontrollable. As a piece of interface design it also shows the system's range in one image: the same grammar that states WALL IS STOP can state a population law, and the player reads the consequence off the world rather than off a counter, because there is no counter anywhere. Frame at about 0:32 in the Release date trailer (Steam), manually extracted at 31.5s: the pipeline's scene-change pass emitted no frame for this sequence.
Patterns
How the screen is arranged.
Screen inventory
- a single rule at bottom centre: BABA (magenta noun, BA over BA) IS MORE (black text on a magenta-pink tile, MO over RE)
- roughly forty white Baba sprites filling the frame in a widening diamond formation above and around the rule
- several Babas overlap and stack on each other at the formation's edges - the multiplication is still visibly outrunning the available space
- pure black background with no terrain, objects or HUD - the rule and its consequence are the entire screen
