What to study

A run of Against the Storm is built from drafts, and this is the draft screen: four building blueprints dealt like cards, each one a miniature model in a knotwork frame over a text block that refuses to describe the building and instead prices it. What a card sells is a recipe list with star ratings, the Grill's three-star Skewers against its one-star Ale, the Brick Oven's three-star Pie, plus the one input that defines this game's economy, rain: every card here 'Can use: Drizzle Water', so the choice is also a bet on which water the settlement will collect. The Plantation card is the honest exception that teaches the rule, replacing the recipe list with a land condition ('Uses nearby farm fields'). Under each card a single PICK; at the foot, the roguelite's pressure valve, REROLL, priced in amber, and the counter reads 0, so this particular draft must be taken as dealt. Nothing on the screen shows the settlement the building will join: the decision is deliberately made blind, from production chains alone. Frame at about 0:34 in the 1.0 Release Date Trailer video (Steam), manually extracted at 34.0s: the pipeline's scene-change candidate for this sequence (v1_0002 at 41.5s) catches the NEXT draft mid-reveal with only its first card shown.

Screen inventory

  • PICK A BUILDING header beside the raven portrait of the Queen's Envoy, the same envoy who delivers orders also drafts the settlement's buildings
  • four building cards, each crowned by a miniature model of the building in a knotwork frame: DISTILLERY, GRILL, BRICK OVEN, PLANTATION
  • every card states its economy in the same three lines: what it can produce with star ratings (Distillery: Wine **, Porridge **, Barrels **; Grill: Skewers ***, Copper Bars *, Ale *; Brick Oven: Pie ***, Coal *, Incense *) and which rainwater it can use (all four: Drizzle Water)
  • the PLANTATION card breaks the pattern honestly: 'Uses nearby farm fields to produce Berries **, Plant Fiber **', the one card whose input is land, not goods
  • a red PICK button under each card, and at the foot a REROLL button priced in amber, the counter beside it reads 0, so this draft cannot be re-rolled

Fetched 2026-10-21. verified 2026-10-21: frame manually extracted at 34.0s from the pipeline-downloaded 1.0 Release Date Trailer (Steam) and inspected visually at full resolution (1920x1080 native); genuine in-game Pick a Building draft confirmed settled and legible (all four building names, every recipe line and star rating, the Drizzle Water lines and the REROLL counter at 0 all readable; probes at 33.0s and 35.0s show the identical four cards, at 35.0s only the cursor has moved to the Brick Oven's PICK; the cursor rests on the Plantation PICK at 34.0s, its button lit orange); no trailer typography overlays the frame
