What to study

In 80 Days you do not manage an inventory grid, you pack suitcases. Every item is a single drawn object at readable size, compass, ruby, monkey, wrench, horn, and the only organisation the interface offers is which case it lies in and what it lies next to. The telescope in the left-hand case, stretched across the full width, shows the system's one concession to shape: long things take long spaces. Because the cases slide sideways as a train and the globe waits behind them, the screen teaches the game's central tension without a word of text: everything you might sell, bribe or survive with is in these cases, and the cases are finite. Frame at about 0:55 in the Official trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the cases slide through the frame and this is the settled moment between slides). Disclosure: the trailer's caption 'PLAN AND STRATEGISE' is fading across the top of the frame, and the left and right cases are cropped by the trailer's framing.

Screen inventory

  • luggage is literal: each inventory container is a black suitcase with a handle, drawn at travelling size over the globe, and its contents sit inside it as large individual pictograms, no list, no grid of identical cells, no text labels anywhere
  • the centre case holds five items in two loose rows: a brass compass and a cut ruby above, a red pipe wrench and a red-and-white hunting horn below, and between them a wind-up monkey in a fez, trade goods, tools and curios share one case with no category separation
  • the neighbouring cases are cropped by the frame edges mid-carousel: at left a skull, dice and a telescope that spans the case's full width (long items take a whole row), at right a marble bust and a katana just sliding into view, the cases form one horizontal train of luggage you scroll through
  • behind the cases the globe and the red route line stay visible: packing is done on the map, in the middle of the journey, not in a separate inventory mode
