What to study

80 Days is a book you draw on a map. Its story arrives as journal lines in Passepartout's voice, and the trailer's settled frame shows the game's deepest layout idea: the prose is pinned to the geography it happened on, floating over the globe beside the red line of the route, so the choice log and the map are one document, where you have been is written in sentences, and the sentences sit on the places. There is no dialogue box because there is nothing to separate the story from: the interface is the journey, annotated. Frame at about 0:58 in the Official trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the quotes fade in over the rotating globe; this frame holds the first quote fully legible). Disclosure: a second journal line at lower right is caught mid-fade and runs off the frame edge; the floating presentation over the globe is the trailer's montage of the game's journal and map, disclosed here.

Screen inventory

  • the journal entry floats directly on the globe in italic serif quotation, 'The desert stretched open and empty on either side...', set beside the red route line at the stretch of map it describes, with no panel, box or border behind the text
  • the geography underneath is the eastern Mediterranean: ring markers for cities, pale onward routes fanning north and east, and the red completed route arriving from the west and stopping at a red dot, the story text and the journey line share one surface
  • a second journal line is fading in at the lower right, 'I woke this morning with a sabre at my throat...', the log arriving as a stream of remembered moments pinned along the path, each quote surfacing as the route passes the place it happened
