What to study

80 Days does its route planning on the world itself. There is no map screen separate from play: the globe is the menu, cities are rings, onward journeys are pins stamped with the vehicle that runs them, and the red line of the journey so far is always in view behind the choices ahead. The 'x2' badges are the design's quiet density, a city with two departures reads differently from a city with one, and the whole race against the clock becomes a problem of reading icon density across a planet. Frame at about 0:44 in the Official trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the trailer rotates the globe continuously and its scene-change pass finds no cuts; this frame is taken as the rotation settles over Eurasia, after the trailer's 'RACE OTHER PLAYERS' caption has faded out).

Screen inventory

  • the globe is the whole screen and the whole interface: a flat-shaded Earth centred on Eurasia, with no chrome, panels or buttons anywhere, planning happens directly on the planet
  • cities are small pale rings scattered across the landmasses; the ones already reached are joined by the thick red line of the journey so far, running east from a red dot at London across Asia, while pale grey lines draw the routes not yet taken
  • departures are dark circular pins bearing a white vehicle pictogram, locomotive, ship, motorcar, airship, pinned over the region they serve, several carrying a small 'x2' badge beneath the icon where two departures share a city
  • the pin cluster sits over Europe and the Middle East, thinning to single trains across Central Asia: the density of icons is itself the timetable, showing at a glance where the network is rich and where one missed connection strands you
