What to study

Spiritfarer's navigation screen is a sailor's chart that happens to be software. The whole sea is one sheet of stained parchment: coasts are dotted lines, unsailed regions sit under grey watercolour cloud, and the places worth going glow, literally, as small gold beacons circled in dots, with a purple-black vortex and one gold-outlined island breaking the tan field. There is no panel, no list and no minimap-within-the-map; the paper is the interface, and your boat is a tiny blue-and-yellow pennant pinned to it. It is the rare world map whose information design is mostly subtraction: fog, dotted borders and light do all the work that other games give to icon legends and sidebars. The one piece of hard instrumentation is the crosshair. Thin white lines quarter the chart and where they meet, a small yellow readout gives the cursor's coordinates, 'X: 14 / Y: 77', so a destination can be shared and found by number, while the bottom-right corner carries the whole verb set in one quiet strip: 'ZL Zoom Out, ZR Zoom In, B Set Destination, A Back'. Frame at about 1:02 in the Farewell Edition Launch Trailer (Steam), pipeline candidate candidates/v0_0018.png at 62.10s, copied unchanged (MD5 matches the candidate). One disclosure: faint ghost letters mid-left are the trailer's 'Explore an enchanting World' title card fading in over the chart; within two seconds it covers the map entirely, and this is the last frame where the crosshair, coordinates and prompt strip are all fully legible. The ghost is trailer burn-in, not game UI.

Screen inventory

  • the full-screen parchment sea chart: tan watercolour paper with a faint coordinate grid, coasts and region borders drawn as dotted lines
  • grey clouded landmasses for unsailed water at left and bottom, their edges picked out in dotted gold
  • a thin white crosshair meeting right of centre, with a small yellow readout beside it: 'X: 14' over 'Y: 77'
  • glowing gold icons dotted across the chart inside dotted circles, tent-like resource/event markers that read as lit beacons on the paper
  • a purple-black vortex with a gold centre near the top, and a dark island silhouette with a gold outline at bottom centre
  • the player's own marker at left of centre, a small blue-and-yellow boat pennant; a tiny drawn island with three trees at far left
  • the bottom-right control strip in white: 'ZL Zoom Out', 'ZR Zoom In', 'B Set Destination', 'A Back', the buttons drawn as chips and circles
