What to study

The same parchment bubble, stripped down. In the library scene the camera pushes in on a nun who has just found something she was not meant to find, and her whole line, 'What are you doing?!', fits in a bubble a fraction of the frame's width, hung at the top of the shot with its ribbon tail dropping straight to her head. Two things differ from the tagged examination bubble (pentiment-0) and both are the design working. There is no name plaque: the shot is a close-up of one face, attribution would be redundant, so the interface omits it. And the lettering is not the neat book hand of Florian's line but a pale, flat, printed style, grey where his was black ink, so the words read as blurted rather than composed. Pentiment's dialogue system treats type as voice: who is speaking, and how, is carried by the letterforms and the furniture around them before a word is read. Frame at about 0:53 in the Pentiment Launch Trailer (Steam), pipeline candidate candidates/v0_0031.png at 52.8s; the wider library framing that precedes it (shelves, the embrace at the shelves, candidates/v0_0026.png to v0_0030.png) carries no bubble and was rejected as UI-less. Kept alongside the tagged and chorus frames because it is the system's minimum viable form: one bubble, no plaque, one change of typeface, and the scene's meaning survives. No trailer burn-in, watermark or caption appears in this frame.

Screen inventory

  • a single parchment speech bubble near the top centre, small against the wall, its left end curled and its ribbon tail dropping to the nun's head
  • the bubble text 'What are you doing?!' in pale, flat, print-like lettering, visibly greyer and thinner than the inked book hand of the trailer's other bubbles
  • no speaker name plaque on this bubble, unlike the tagged bubbles elsewhere in the trailer
  • the speaker in close-up: a nun in a grey veil and wimple, brows raised, lit from the left by a hanging oil lamp with a single orange flame
  • two dark latticed windows on the plaster wall behind her, the room otherwise bare
  • no other UI of any kind in the frame
