What to study

One bubble for a whole crowd. The frame is packed, more than a dozen townsfolk standing in rough rows, every face turned the same way, and a single wide parchment bubble sits over the top of them carrying the demand the scene exists for: 'A name, Andreas. Just give us a name. We'll do the rest.' The bubble's ribbon tail is the longest in the trailer, sweeping down and left into the top of the crowd, and it is deliberately imprecise: there is no name plaque, and the tail lands among several partly hidden figures rather than on one clear speaker, because the line belongs to the crowd as much as to anyone in it. Inside the line, the typesetting does the acting. The roman book hand carries the sentences, but 'Just' is set in a flowing italic, one word of pressure in the middle of the demand, the same trick the chorus frame (pentiment-3) plays with red ink, emphasis applied to letterforms instead of to a voice performance the game does not have. Frame at about 1:10 in the Pentiment Launch Trailer (Steam), pipeline candidate candidates/v0_0038.png at 69.9s, the widest of the trailer's bubble shots and the only one whose addressee is absent from the frame. Kept as the set's fifth frame because it completes the system's range on record: tagged close-up, untagged close-up, tagged wide shot, overlapping chorus, and now a single unattributed bubble organising a crowd. No trailer burn-in, watermark or caption appears in this frame.

Screen inventory

  • one wide parchment speech bubble at top centre, curled scroll end at its right, its long ribbon tail sweeping down-left toward the partly hidden speakers at the top of the crowd
  • the bubble text in a book hand with mixed emphasis: 'A name, Andreas.' in roman lettering, 'Just give us a name.' with 'Just' in a flowing italic, then 'We'll do the rest.'
  • no speaker name plaque: the line is addressed to Andreas, who is not in the frame, and its speaker is one face in the crowd the tail points into
  • the crowd itself, more than a dozen townsfolk in work clothes filling the frame in rough rows, all facing the same way, toward the unseen Andreas
  • the central figures: a bearded man in a green cap whose head the bubble's tail crosses, a woman in a wide hat behind him, a well-dressed man in red with a fur collar at right centre
  • no other UI in the frame; the single bubble has to organise the whole crowd shot
