What to study

COCOON's whole interface, which is to say almost none, and that is the design worth studying. The protagonist carries a world on its back: the translucent orange orb at centre is larger than the character's body, glows amber, and holds dark silhouetted shapes inside it, because the orb is literally a playable world the player can dive into and carry between places. Inventory, ability and progress are all communicated by this one object and its colour: there is no inventory screen to open, no ability bar to read, no counter to check, because the thing you own is visible on your back at all times and enters the fiction completely. Underfoot, the circular stone disc carries the game's only graphic language, etched markings rather than overlay: a bright white curved arc and dot row on the left half of the pad, dark concentric arcs on the right, and a faint red-orange rim glow for the pad's active state. COCOON's pads, symbols and orb colours are its signage system, a wordless glyph vocabulary the player learns by use instead of by tutorial text. Frame at about 0:36 in the 'COCOON | Available Now' trailer (Steam), pipeline candidate candidates/v0_0007.png at 35.5s, copied unchanged (MD5 matches the candidate). Honesty about scope: this is the single frame in the audited trailer where an interface substitute is legible, and it is diegetic presentation, not a screen. Across the trailer's full 59 seconds (verified on a 1-frame-per-second filmstrip as well as the contact sheet) there is no HUD, no menu, no title or settings screen, no dialogue, no prompt and no readout of any kind; the remaining candidates are UI-less exploration, boss encounters and cinematics, plus an ESRB card, a 'From Jeppe Carlsen' credit card and the COCOON logo end card, all rejected. The frame carries no publisher burn-in, watermark or caption. Cataloguing COCOON on this one frame is a deliberate minimal-HUD document: it records a major design-recognised game (Geometric Interactive, lead gameplay designer of Limbo and Inside) whose interface decision was to have effectively none, and it should not be padded with gameplay stills dressed up as UI.

Screen inventory

  • the small winged protagonist at centre, seen from above, carrying a translucent orange orb on its back: the orb is larger than the character's body, glows amber, and dark silhouetted shapes are visible inside it
  • the circular stone disc the protagonist stands on, etched with the game's only graphic markings: a bright white curved arc with a row of small dots on the disc's left half, and dark concentric arc segments on its right half
  • a faint red-orange glow around the disc's rim, the pad's active state, against the disc's otherwise matte grey stone
  • no text, numerals, bars, meters, icons, button prompts or cursor anywhere in the frame: the screen edges are bare world (green floodwater, grey pipes, a circular tank at left, dark red pillars above)
  • the surrounding green world itself (flooded industrial ruins, pipes and tanks) rendered in full colour around the pad, the world the carried orb contains a counterpart of
