What to study

Rogue Trader's ground combat packs a full warband RPG into the frame without a single window opening: six portraits across the top for the party, a skull-and-portrait queue down the left for the turn order, and a bottom bar that is one character at a time, face, wounds, weapon and ammunition, and an ability grid that advertises its own keyboard shortcuts (Shift and Ctrl rows) instead of hiding them. The battlefield stays readable underneath because information lives on the models only where it is needed: a nameplate and wound count over the acting character, green rings under friendly bases, damage as small floating numerals inside the flame. It is Owlcat density, but zoned, party at the top, turn order at the left, the active character at the bottom, the world in the middle. Disclosure: the action label at the top is partially overlapped by the portrait strip and reads '…lamer Shot: Spray' in frame. Frame at about 0:33 in the Release trailer (Steam; manual extraction at 33.0s, the scene-change pass jumps from the deployment beat at 24.31s to the next arena at 35.16s and misses this fight's settled HUD).

Screen inventory

  • the party is a row of six painted portraits along the top centre, each with a small yellow house-chevron beneath it and the active character, Heinrix, fifth, boxed in gold; a vertical turn queue of portraits and enemy skulls runs down the left edge, the current round marked by a green winged '2'
  • the bottom bar is built around the active portrait: Heinrix's face in a winged gothic frame, his 31/31 wounds in green beneath it, weapon slots at lower left showing the flamer and its 5/6 ammunition pips, and at lower right a two-row ability grid whose slots are labelled by their hotkeys, Shift+1 to Shift+0, Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+0, most still dark this early in the fight
  • the shot itself is staged inside the UI's own language: Heinrix stands on a glowing green base ring at upper right under a floating nameplate ('Heinrix', 31), the flamer cone crosses the whole deck to a red-armoured enemy who shows floating 6s as the damage lands, and the action's name rides at the top of the screen, '…lamer Shot: Spray', its first letter covered by the portrait strip's end (disclosed in the study note)
  • the same riveted icon rail from the star chart caps the right edge, and the end-turn control at lower right is a green skull in a cog dial with 'Space' lettered under it, every screen in the game is the same brass-and-cathedral instrument
