What to study

Triangle Strategy's dialogue system is a speech banner, not a text box: a parchment flag pinned across the centre of the diorama, named for its speaker (Regna), tailed to his sprite by the throne, and advanced with a small chevron at its corner. There is no portrait cut-in and no screen dimming, identification is carried entirely by the name label and the tail, and the scene the line is about (a throne room after a massacre, the party standing among the fallen) remains in view above and below the words. The design trusts the banner form to do the emotional work: a dying king's last sentence gets the full width of the screen, typeset in quiet serif, while the game world waits underneath it. Frame at about 1:43 in the ESRB EN Pre-Purchase video (Steam), a manual probe extraction (probes/P102.5.png at 102.5s; at 102.0s the line is still typing, ending 'hands n').

Screen inventory

  • a wide octagonal parchment banner stretched across the middle of the screen, its pointed tail at the top left aimed up at the speaker: Regna, the small crowned sprite seated beside the throne on the dais
  • the speaker label 'Regna' in small blue-grey capitals at the banner's top left over a thin rule, name only, no portrait bust anywhere in the system
  • the line itself in serif, complete and settled: 'Roland. Lord Wolffort. ...There is no saving me. The future of Glenbrook lies in your hands now!', with the small advance chevron at the banner's bottom right
  • above and below the banner the throne room stays fully visible: green carpet, candelabra, spearmen, the party's six sprites at bottom right, and fallen soldiers in dark pools across the floor, the banner bisects the scene instead of replacing it
