What to study
The game's first and most consequential decision is presented with almost no interface at all: a magenta 'CHOOSE A DESTINATION' bar and three asteroids floating on a starfield, one cratered and grey, one streaked with water, one capped with ice. There are no stat blocks, no difficulty ratings, no resource lists; the rocks' portraits are the pitch, and the player reads climate and promise straight off the drawing, Klei's cartoon house style doing the work a spreadsheet would do in another sim. The trailer frames the panel as an inset over the zoomed-out asteroid, caverns, water pools and the Printing Pod chamber with its three first duplicants, which is accidentally honest: this choice is the map, made before the map exists. Frame at about 0:28 in the Launch Trailer (Steam).

Screen inventory
- magenta header bar reading 'CHOOSE A DESTINATION' in white capitals across the panel's top
- three asteroid options drawn as large rock portraits on a starfield: a cratered grey rock (large, left), a smaller water-streaked rock (centre), an ice-capped rock (right, partly cropped by the panel edge)
- no stats, names or difficulty text anywhere on the panel, the choice is presented purely as planetary portraiture
- the panel inset over the zoomed-out asteroid itself: layered caverns, glowing water pools at the right and below
- the Printing Pod chamber visible mid-frame with the colony's first three duplicants standing beside it

Source details
Fetched 2026-10-20. verified 2026-10-20: frame extracted from the official Launch Trailer (Steam) and inspected visually at full resolution; genuine destination-selection panel confirmed ('CHOOSE A DESTINATION' header, three asteroid options) composited by the trailer as an inset over the asteroid map, in play this choice is a full pre-game screen; a 4fps segment scan (~27-32.5s) shows the inset scrolling further asteroid options, so the panel is a carousel, not a static card
