Severed Claws

Queenless Necrophage who enslave minor factions — every village destroyed becomes an army.

Overview

The Severed Claws are a hive of Necrophage that were separated from the main hive after they meddled with ancient and forbidden technology. Cut off from the queen and their ordinary means of replenishing their numbers, they have come to rely on physical augmentations — and on the less united forces of Saiadha.

Playstyle

The Necrophage hive refracted through exploitation. Where the main hive devours, the Severed Claws plunder villages and force the survivors to serve — in their cities and their armies. Every destroyed village becomes a new unit in the capital, and every kill lets a unit strike twice.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • Can hold minor faction population in their cities — unlike the main Necrophage hive
  • Destroying a village spawns a unit of that minor faction in the capital
  • Population provides population slots and reduces district costs
  • Destroying any enemy allows the unit to attack a second time that turn — each unit punches above its weight

Weaknesses

  • Cut off from the queen: no larva reinforcements after battles, no Matriarch's Eye
  • Units must be constructed in the capital — slower replenishment than the main hive
  • Dependent on villages to exploit; barren regions starve the engine

Unique mechanics

Minor faction exploitation

Unlike the main Necrophage hive, the Severed Claws can have minor faction population in their cities — but it will not grow by itself. New minor faction population is added when they rebuild a “pacified” village.

Village-centered districts

Without a queen, the Severed Claws have no access to special districts like the Matriarch's Eye. Instead they group their districts around minor faction villages.

Population-driven growth

Unlike other factions, their Communal Habitations do not provide population slots but help population grow faster — and this population in turn provides population slots and reduces the cost of districts.

Second-strike combat

They cannot rely on larva spawned after every battle to replenish their ranks; instead they must construct their units in their capital. But each unit can punch above its weight: destroying any enemy allows it to attack a second time that turn.
